The CBI has booked a Chennai Port Trust official, who allegedly took a bribe of over Rs 97 lakh from an aged man on the purported promise of getting his son appointed as an assistant site visitors supervisor within the belief, officers stated on Thursday.

It is alleged that Ok Poopathy, who labored as the non-public assistant to the chief engineer of the belief and is at the moment below suspension, met complainant N Devaraj (63) on a practice journey, they stated.

Based on his assurance, Devaraj allegedly paid over Rs 97 lakh in money and cheques to the accused between December 17, 2016 and November 20, 2019, the officers stated.

Devaraj turned suspicious of Poopathy as he stopped taking calls and coming for private conferences, the officers stated.

It is alleged that some unidentified folks threatened Devaraj in February and took his signatures on a doc that stated all his funds to Poopathy have been returned to him, they stated.

Devaraj filed a grievance with the vigilance officer of the Chennai Port Trust, together with paperwork of transactions, mortgage, pawn receipts and audio recordings of conversations between Poopathy and his son Sathyaprakash, the officers stated.

The Chennai Port Trust subsequently suspended Poopathy, they added.

Devaraj additionally approached the CBI along with his grievance, which has now been taken up by the company for investigation after registering an FIR in opposition to Poopathy below the Prevention of Corruption Act.
