NEW DELHI: For many years, the evolution of the Indian monsoon has not been solely understood. Nor have scientists decoded the way it intensified and the way it has diversified with time. By analysing sediment from the Bay of Bengal, researchers have discovered that the current Indian monsoon system goes again at the very least 27 million years.
“Previous studies only went as far back as 12 million years. They used wind and vegetation data, but that would not paint a clear picture of monsoon intensity,” corresponding creator Sajid Ali from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeontology in Lucknow informed TOI. “We analysed sediment from the Bay of Bengal. Change in sediment is straight linked to vary in monsoon … The presence of minerals relies on the depth of monsoon.
Different minerals are shaped when the monsoon is robust and others when it’s weak.” For the research, to be printed in Wiley journal ‘Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology’, they collected 38 sediment samples beneath Japan’s International Ocean Discovery Program. When they studied nano fossils (plankton that are one thousand millionth of a metre) from the underside of the sediment deposits, “those were found to be 27 million years old,” Ali defined.
